HBO Max subscription prices just got cheaper if you don’t mind ads

WarnerMedia has added a second way for customers to subscribe to HBO Max. Starting on Wednesday, the streaming service will offer a $9.99 a month subscription option that includes ads in certain places around the service.

This new ad-supported option for HBO Max will include all of the content that’s available with the streaming service’s regular subscription, with the exception of Warner Bros.’ day-and-date movie premieres, which will only continue through the end of 2021. There are also a few features missing from HBO Max’s ad plan, like the ability to download content and watch it offline, and the cap for picture quality. With the lower tier, users will only be able to stream at 1080p, rather than 4K.

According to HBO Max executive vice president and general manager Andy Forssell, the ads on the service are designed to be “elegant” and “tasteful.” Perhaps even more importantly, HBO Max with ads will have a maximum of four minutes of commercials per hour, which WarnerMedia says is the lowest commercial ad load in the streaming industry.

A regular HBO Max subscription with all the frills remains $14.99. The service also has an annual option that makes things even cheaper at $149.99 a year for no ads and $99.99 a year for HBO Max with ads.

The service — now on PS5 and Roku — touts the HBO, DC Entertainment, Cartoon Network, and Criterion Collection libraries, and will soon carry WB’s first-run movies.
